Middlesbrough College: Reviews
Fantastic experience: My experience studying with Middlesbrough College and Open University has been brilliant. The course is interesting and teaches just enough to really spark curiosity and encourage exploring topics further without feeling overwhelming. The tutors are fantastic and really easy to talk to. Duncan in particular is understanding, well informed, and an all round great guy, as are the rest of the teaching team. If you are thinking about studying with the Open University, I would highly recommend doing it through Middlesbrough College. If you do computing the coffee is fairly decent.
Fantastic experience: I am currently studying at Middlesbrough College after many years away from education. I was apprehensive about attending a college as a mature student, but I have had a great experience with both staff and classmates at Middlesbrough College. Separate from the main building, MC Digital has a cosy, self contained vibe but the resources are fantastic. The tutors are friendly and welcoming, and some really do go above and beyond to give a great learning experience.
Negative experience: Clare the one who teacher's art is also not doing a good job she is making some students upset and doesn't give any details one what to do when your in level 1 you would expect to get some help clare is not best suited in that corse she is horrible
Positive experience: It's a nice area and good education
Negative experience: Not allowed to wear a beanie in class because "hats and coats aren't allowed" but didn't tell anyone else off for wearing their coats. It is perverted favoritism and discrimination.
Hi Rita, we're sorry to hear you've had this experience within the college. We do have dress codes in place to ensure health and safety within the different workspaces. Please send any details to [email protected] and we will escalate this with the relevant department. Many thanks.
Negative experience: awful college, staff members were extremely rude to me and my friends, a safety plan so i felt a lot more secure in college was put in place, all of my teachers were aware of this, yet shouted at me when i actually followed my safeguarding plan? interrogated me about my disabled mother and when i reported my old form teacher i coincidentally get kicked off my course?
Hi Rowan, we take issues such as this very seriously. Please can you send further details to [email protected] and we will escalate this with the relevant department. Many thanks.
Negative experience: should a get zero
Negative experience: Let’s hope certain teachers are able to focus on the students education today, instead of using their whole lesson to have a meltdown over a Trump win. This isn’t the first time a lesson has been used for personal views given as facts. It was white terrorism, a term I’ve never heard & call the police on family members & friends for racism last month. To which I was told is mandatory to teach by the government. This is not true. Do your job & put your students first. You’ve chosen your career, don’t spoil the students chances.
Hi, we're sorry to hear you've had this experience with the college. Please send any details to [email protected] and we will escalate this with the relevant department. Many thanks.
Positive experience: We came here for netball. Last week they double booked for two groups. It was disappointing for us. On the other hand its a clean place with helpful workers.

Fantastic experience: I'm very Interested
Fantastic experience: Work there absolutely fantastic place to go
Positive experience: Hmmmm
Negative experience: Honestly had the worst experience here, I got bullied severely and I got told to slit my wrists and go and die. Staff deal with bullying awful, worst college to go to.
Fantastic experience: Come here for dinner every day, the dinner staff are always friendly and have a good laugh with you. Food is nice too.
Negative experience: Got fed up of ringing with an enquiry about a course.told it was a different building and would get back to me.left my number didn't get back to me so sent an email still no reply.looked elsewhere.
Negative experience: There shouldn't be any stars!! It was a very bad experience the teachers are terrible and not interested in helping the students at all...
Fantastic experience:
Fantastic experience: 1000-5 amazing helps with anything staff are respectful and helpful if you need anything at all they get it to you it’s amazing recommend this to anyone
Fantastic experience: Trainee here Great experience
Negative experience: Dreadful place, more about public image than education. Bullying is rife. Courses leave important information out and you leave with a certificate not worth the paper it's printed on
Hi Vicky, we're sorry to hear this has been your experience. We take bullying very seriously and have protocols in place to prevent this. If you would like to pass on your contact details, please email [email protected], and we can pass this onto the department. Many thanks.
Negative experience: Without a doubt the worst place I've ever worked at. I was only there for 3 months, and left in April. I worked across two different areas, and some of the staff were lovely to work with. Whilst others, were not so lovely to work with. The management clearly don't know what they are doing. And if your face doesn't fit, you will often be excluded by fellow staff members. I regret even applying to work at the college. Some staff members that I worked with honestly didn't seem to care about the students. The college is all about getting their students through to make themselves look good. For the area I worked in, they say they like to pass everyone. They don't care if the students are not competent enough to pass the course. They won't let students fail, and they will spoon feed them the answers to get them to pass the course.
Negative experience: Middlesbrough college management are very uncaring and unsupportive people. My experience has been overall negative of the college. It is a long story. In 2015, some students made false allegations against me. The staff supported them. I did nothing wrong. In 2022, one of the departments made me feel very distressed by not supporting one of the projects I intended to do. I cried in car, feeling dejected. It was a project to support dyspraxic individuals, to help them get into work through practical projects given them plenty of skills and broadening their experiences. Given I am dyspraxic, I am very passionate about promoting the cause. The department completely dismissed the project , saying they do not understand despite explaining so many times. One of the managers made condensing comments saying I am educated and intelligent, making me feel very low. Another department promised me volunteers. They contacted me last year, but never heard a reply. They wasted my time. I complained, but to no avail as they echoed the views of the management in the department. I will never return to the college again. More training needs to be done on improving customer care skills of staff and management.
Hi Pritthijit, we take complaints like this very seriously and are sorry you feel this way. If you could send any feedback to [email protected] we will look into this
Negative experience: Tbh not a very nice place for some people especially health and social care, teachers not teaching students properly there’s teachers coming and going so students are left without staff. Students are also getting kicked out of the college for a silly mistake or no reason. If I was you I would not go to Middlesbrough college
Negative experience: Health and social team irresponsible and the type of people you would want in educational departments. My family member was singled out by the teacher and was trying to expel my family member from college by exaggerating reports and the situation without any formal consultation or confirmation from the relevant departments and parents. During a conversation with teacher over the phone long before the exam, the teacher predicted and frankly said what if my family member fails her GCSEs without providing details or explanation if the family member had low score or else. As a matter of fact all course works were marked good and excellent prior to running into problems with the particular team and the problem was young teenager behavior as she was in the process of becoming an adult, instead of being supportive the team chose to single her out and on the results day we got the news the she failed the very subjects the teacher mentioned 2months prior to the exam. Most importantly as she was given the option by another member of the college to do the maths test again on the day of exam results were given so she can move on to her next corse of future studies that’s when the teacher from health and social approaches her and asks to leave and would not allow for the test to take place because “it won’t make a difference” she said. You are better of applying for Stockton college. Knowingly that not only it will cost the family financially but most importantly the negative effect of the teachers behavior and actions on the well-being of this young woman and on her social life as well as on her future studies and confidence. After careful consideration and personal assessment of our conversations with the teacher it seemed to me that the teacher was and is keeping the head of the college in the dark
Hi, we're sorry to hear this. We have forwarded this to the head of department who will pick this up. If you have any further concerns or would like to pass on your contact details please email: [email protected]. Many thanks.
Fantastic experience: so much better!!
Fantastic experience: Masterwork
Negative experience: I called the college but they put me on wrong department for several time and also the staff has no manners.
Fantastic experience: Loved my time working here. Worked with great colleagues and have learned a lot while working with them.
Negative experience: the teachers are extremely unsupportive and rude they didn’t help when I asked instead told me to search answers online, and they treat students unfairly
Hi,We're sorry to hear about your experience as we pride ourselves on providing outstanding support to all students. It would be great to discuss this with you in more detail to see how we can help and resolve any issues you may be experiencing, please email [email protected] with any further information. Thanks
Positive experience: Went to the open evening. I don't think there's enough student parking. The place is huge. I've never liked its location. I think it's awkward to get to. The place is clean and relatively new. Very accommodating so far.
Positive experience: Dad went here and now hes an egg. Thanks guys.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place
Fantastic experience: The only place I feel comfortable about my learning and the staff are really supportive and nice
Fantastic experience: Excellent place to study good facility and great tutors.
Negative experience: We need to de-colonise education? Pushing students toward radical left wing organisations? Avoid avoid avoid!
Fantastic experience: I very much enjoyed my time studying there and did quite well. Duncan the database and programming teacher at the time was a big help with my learning and grades, so thank you to him!
Negative experience: Extremely rude staff , me and partner got told by a phone call by a certain member of staff that we aren’t good enough for the health access course and we wouldn’t achieve the careers we want to achieve in the future. We also got told universities would laugh at our statements we given to access the course. Made me and my partner very upset and angry. Avoid this college.
Good afternoon Emma. I'm extremely sorry you and your partner have experienced this. Please could you email your telephone number and an email address to [email protected] and I will escalate this to the department manager of health and care to look into. Many thanks
Fantastic experience: Since leaving secondary school I’ve had an amazing experience with Middlesbrough college and the McDigital department. Duncan Skilton - has been an amazing tutor and ensures every lesson is entertaining and enjoyable whilst learning. (Which is rare)
Fantastic experience: Beautiful college, inside and out. Access to Higher Education (Health) lecturers were friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my time there and they prepared me well for University which is where I'm at now. thank you and keep up the good work. Shout out to Kath, Ian and Jo, you guys are amazing!
Fantastic experience: I'm in my second year studying in MC Digital. Would highly recommend studying here. Duncan Skilton and all the staff are amazing. They will help you with your work when you need it. In this current climate they are planning lessons for us in college and online to do at home. Duncan has helped me out massively with building my confidence. He helped me with making presentations and showing me different techniques to help present them and how I could manage my nerves.
Negative experience: not epic at all they mislead me about my course that is not epic at all fam
Positive experience: Done my fork lift course and test here recently my tutor Gary Glaxton was great .learnt a lot from him well recommended
Negative experience: I'm a student in the construction department and I love 1 and a half hours away from the college, and the department is taking all the lockers out of the workshop and making us carry our ppe home everyday which is obviously an inconvenience, and in the process of doing it they lost my steel toe boots, when were on break why should be have to carry all of our equipment around with us
Positive experience: An original and stand-out piece of architecture, the centre-piece of the redevelopment of the old, St Hildas and Middlesbrough Dock area. A great modern, facility for the young people of the area.
Fantastic experience: The college is alright, don't know what half of these other divvys are on about, probably took too much smack. Teachers are sound, shout out to Big Pauly M and Dazza UTFB!!!!! Cameron, stop being a dweeb
Negative experience: Clearly the career advisors don't want to help young adults go back into training... Massively let down as I used to be a former student years ago. Now it's like they want to see the back of young adults looking to go back into education. But hey, if it's all about university (which isn't for me) then by all means they'll help you out! Shocking display of advisors who are meant to help guide you.
Negative experience: art department are pretty good really, have to pay for literally everything but ehhh still not bad. the issue is the other bulk of the students, such as the high amount of violent chavs that hang out in the main part of the college and ruin the entire place. i would not reccomend this college due to it's poor teaching standards and terrible students. food is awful too and the college looks awful inside and out. UPDATE apparently there was an arts award this year we were not told about and there has been a huge delay in getting our grades, the whole college is badly managed and I DO NOT RECCOMEND COMING HERE it's a bad college. FURTHER UPDATE: no matter how many times i'm contacted nothing can make up for this place and what they did. they throw out your coursework when you want to come and collect it even though it's well within the timeframe. PLEASE DON'T COME HERE
We're sorry to hear you've had a negative experience at the college! If you would like to send any feedback to [email protected] we will be happy to look into this for you.
Fantastic experience: Great place to study, really good facilities and really knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Thanks for the great feedback Duncan!
Negative experience: Did a pre access course from September 2017-March 2018, got picked on by the teacher, ended up quitting because of her and complained about it and made out I was lying/ a liar
Fantastic experience: Studied Access to Humanities and Social Sciences. Excellent facilities and learning experience as a whole. Thourouly enjoyed my time at MC6.
Negative experience: Class room behaviour is beyond poor with college management willing to do almost nothing about it. Dealing with college management is a uphill struggle and getting any changes made seems impossible. The only reason the place is not getting 1 star is because the lectures know what they are doing.
Hi John, sorry to hear of your negative experience. If you would like to send any feedback to [email protected] we will be more than happy to look into this for you.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant place to study with a wide range of courses and brilliant facilities.
Great to hear, thanks Jake!
Fantastic experience: I have worked at Middlesbrough College Sixth Form since 2018 and find it a great place to work. The facilities and courses offered are great, with something to suit everyone. The new 'mix it up' program is great for students who want to mix btec (assignment based) courses with A-Levels. The support students receive is great! The college runs weekly supervised independent study sessions, study sessions with tutors and skills for success lessons; which gives students necessary, transferable skills that they will use in everyday life. The rapport amongst staff and students is also really good, everyone was so friendly and welcoming when I first started. I love working here and hope to be here for many years to come.
Fantastic experience: Middlesbrough College is a flagship educational institution, teaching the key skills needed to secure employment in a large variety of industries. The support provided by both academic and wellbeing staff ensures students thrive no matter what barriers and challenges they face.
Thanks for the great feedback Tom!
Fantastic experience: 10/10 area around the college looks like chernobyl would visit again
Positive experience: Got my name wrong at the start of the year. Food is terrible and dry, mostly rock solid for no reason.
Hi Josh, I am sorry you have had a negative experience in our canteen and during the enrolment period. I will pass on your concerns to the head of your subject area who will be in touch. Thanks
Fantastic experience: Its a great place to study. Teaching is great, the courses open up great opportunities, and the food is decent.
Hi Matthew, thanks for the great feedback!
Negative experience: Worst place ever since I started health care in September I've had the worst time ever full off idiots and bully's lecturers don't do anything about it out of the 7 I have I like one the rest treat you like babies
Hello, I'm sorry you have had a negative experience at Middlesbrough College. Are you able to email [email protected] with further details and a member of our management team can look into this for you. Thanks
Fantastic experience: One of the best colleges in England. Teachers are really friendly and helpful, they never say no to anything they are happy to help you in any problems.
Hi Akif, thanks so much for your positive feedback! We're glad you enjoyed your time with us.
Negative experience: An absolutely TOXIC learning environment. Almost everyone is two-faced, including the unprofessional teachers, who will talk smack behind your back. If you plan on going to this college, don't make friends that you aren't sure on, and just get on with your work. You'll soon be up to your neck in it. P.S DO NOT GO TO THIS COLLEGE FOR ART & DESIGN.
Hello Leon, I'm sorry you have had a negative experience at Middlesbrough College. Are you able to email [email protected] with further details and a member of our management team can look into this for you. Thanks
Negative experience: Both my son AND daughter went here.totally different courses one engineering the other painting and decorating. and Both experienced uninterested lecturers. Bullying from teachers and needless to say as another put it a very TOXIC learning environment. God knows how they get through Ofsted..just another college blagging it ...you can run but you can't hide... hopefully not for long.!!!
Hi Roger, we take complaints like this very seriously and are sorry you feel this way. If you could send any feedback to [email protected] we will look into this.
Positive experience: Middlesbrough College merged with Teesside Tertiary College on 1 August 2002, with it now being spread over four sites. Since 2001, these colleges had been funded by the Learning and Skills Council for England. Once the merger was complete, planning began for the relocation to a single site at Middlehaven in central Middlesbrough. Building work for the new college building at Middlehaven began in early 2007. In September 2008, the four separate sites were eventually consolidated onto a single site[6] with the opening of the new £68 million Middlesbrough college building. The Middlehaven site has since grown with the opening of new college buildings adjacent to the main building. MC6 & MC SPORT (a sixth form centre & sports academy) opened in October 2012, and MC STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths) was officially opened by Professor Brian Cox in November 2015
Negative experience: The food is peng. GG.
Negative experience: smells of poo
Negative experience: You cant give your opinion on a subject or matter as the teachers dont like you giving your thought.
Fantastic experience: The teachers are brilliant and they take their subjects seriously. They are all very passionate about what they do and they all help with whatever you need!
Positive experience: Teachers help when needed, really good college (at least regarding health and social care). Bit unorganised at times
Negative experience: They assigned a plastering teacher who looks like a giant praying mantis to teach databases, and apparently Mr potato head grew some limbs after the last toy story movie, because he got assigned to teach us programming and that went as well as as Hitlers invasion of Russia, and most of the staff are too busy pissing around in a circle jerk trying to make it look like they know what they're doing to actually teach anything. Spare yourself and just go to Stockton riverside, or literally anywhere else, place is a joke.
Negative experience: i asked for chips cheese and beans but the woman preparing my food had the audacity to give me chips beans and cheese! everyone knows that the beans goes on last so the cheese melts...scoundrel! although saying that some teachers have bants
Negative experience: .the chicken connoisseur definitely needs to try them solid chicken nuggets... probably a 1.9 at best as the salt just comes straight off them.
Negative experience: I rang this college at least 20 times( end of may 2016 to end of August) to gain information about 2 different courses..Engineering and Sport....Son went in 3 times to try to find information about the course. NOT 1 TUTOR returned a call and those that were spoken to knew nothing about either of the courses. It does NOT fill you with confidence when they appear so lapse. I had to email the principle of the college directly to ensure a call from a representative of the college. Needless to say wouldn't recommend.
Negative experience: Was here for 2 years, and in all honestly the worsed 2 years in my life what ever you do, do not do health Social Care in this college I don't Level 3 and the lecturers are horrible, I had a meeting one time with me and my mum and my lecture and and she said something to me and mum a couple of weeks later she accused of us lying and there was another lecture present who was there when what was said was said and they both denied it. All the lecture in health and care are in one big massive click and they like lie and say they never said things and they all stick up for each other even though they no what they said! It's disgusting even handed an assignment in and I passed it they marked it on the checker and when I had 1to1 with my tutor afterwards the lecture I had unmarked so I got a stage warning it's a horrible horrible college they call you thick to your face and tell you that you won't get into university so do me a favour do not do health and Social Care here.
Hello Katie, I'm sorry you have had a negative experience at Middlesbrough College. Are you able to email [email protected] with further details and a member of our management team can look into this for you. Thanks
Positive experience: Middlesbrough College offers a huge range of courses, providing fantastic opportunities for everyone in Middlesbrough and the surrounding Tees Valley. I am currently studying AS levels and always look forward to attending college. In my opinion, the quality of teaching is second to none and the support which is on offer is excellent. All the teachers are passionate about their subject and want to pass on their knowledge to students. The students, in turn, are willing to participate and work with each other, offering help as well as being polite and friendly. Amongst the huge range of opportunities the college offers are some fantastic trip destinations. Early next year I will be visiting CERN and the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva with other members of my Physics class. Enrolment was incredibly easy and I was given a lot of information about the courses I wanted to study. I attended taster days at other colleges but found that Middlesbrough was the best choice because of the high pass rate, enthusiastic staff and the overall appeal of the college. I am enjoying my time at Middlesbrough College and hope to be successful in my AS studies. I would highly recommend Middlesbrough College to anyone wanting to continue their studies or further their education.
Negative experience: This college is the worst, it's disorganised and unprofessional. You will lose your academic future. My advice is, do not ever rely on your teachers in your revision, their plan is to finish everything just before the exam and they will probably rush through the specification at the end. Many students probably know what I mean. Check the specification, your teachers might not teach you everything. I saw my brother's college and I would say there is a huge difference in performance. I feel like it's shame to say I have been there but unfortunately, I wish if I can go back in time and change my choice.
Negative experience: Incredibly its as ugly on the inside as it looks from the outside
Fantastic experience: I am a student currently studying within the college, throughout my time studying I have found that, if you ever need help their is always a person there to assist with any problems or enquires that come up whether its for your self or for others, facilities throughout the college are to suit every persons needs, last night I personally attended a meal at the Middlesbrough college water side brassiere for the first time and I must say, with every bite you could taste every flavour, all the staff and students who work in the college and areas are amazing to meet and very welcoming, I have recommended this college to many people I know and will keep doing so.
Fantastic experience: "Driving Ambition, Inspiring Success" An outstanding motto that describes the college perfectly! I am currently in my fourth year studying at Middlesbrough College and have thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I first came to the college in 2010 to study Performing Arts and I can honestly say it was the best two years of my life. The facilities and teaching skills we were provided with were outstanding and the friends I have made are lifelong. During the two years I became ill and spent a lot of time in hospital and away from college. My tutors kept me up to date with all work and I was in constant touch with the college to ensure the work I was doing was correct. There was no added pressure onto my work load and I was constantly being reminded that I could catch up with work once I was well if needed. I feel the college gave me 100% support and I finished the course with MMM to my delight. Towards the end of my course I realised that my health wasn't in the right place for University and had set my mind on a career within Nursing. The college helped me figure out what my next steps were and helped me apply to other colleges to do a Health & Social Care course. A week before my enrolment at another college I realised that I didn’t want to go to another college and applied back to Middlesbrough College to do Health & Social Care which I’m thankful I did. I am now in my last year doing this course and have learnt so much about the different types of nursing and what it takes to become a great nurse which will help me greatly in my future career and education. The college has given me the opportunity of work placements and also have many extracurricular activities and opportunities to get involved in. There is a wide variety of students within the college which I believe makes it a great place to learn and qualified teachers and staff members that are there to support you holistically; not just academically! There are things that could be improved within the college, but isn’t there always? The thing with Middlesbrough College is that it asks students where the areas are they think could be improved and actually do something about it. For example, Health and Care students felt they needed an environment where they could put theory learning to practice. The college went above and beyond that and built a replica hospital ward with two beds in so students are able to learn in an environment that is completely stimulated and relevant to the future career students want to go into; this also get's students excited about learning as a lot of lessons are practical based and not just sitting down in a classroom. I am currently in the process of applying to University’s around the country and will miss the college greatly. It has provided me with so many opportunities and so much support that I feel has put me in a great position to go onto higher education and succeed in my future career.
Fantastic experience: Middlesbrough College is a great place to be , the people are lovely and helpful. Something fun is always happening, both indoors and outdoors. The teaching quality is excellent and if you need help with something the lecturers are really supportive, they make the lessons fun and make time to give you extra support. I love the modern buildings and the "buzz" within the college. The newly opened bridge is the best part of the college, where we can relax and socialise in a big open space (as well as making regular visits to sherry's office). Student services within the college also offer great support and guidance with many problems you may have, which is always really good. I have made some really good friends within the college and I am really glad I came here. The environment is like a university, you are treated with respect and have freedom to do your own thing, I wouldn.t change it for the world. Makes looking forward to university even better.
