Our comment from StudyLanguages about Language Hub Group:

Language Hub Group is a well-known language learning center in the United Kingdom, offering courses in various languages including French, Spanish, Italian, and Polish. Many users have praised the quality of teaching, with a number of positive experiences highlighting the supportive and friendly nature of the tutors. Specifically, students appreciate the small class sizes, allowing for personalized attention and ample speaking practice.

Despite a number of positive reviews, there have been several concerning experiences related to course cancellations and difficulties in obtaining refunds. Users reported instances where classes were either cancelled without much notice or left students without communication about their classes, causing frustration. Some students have mentioned that they felt misled regarding course availability, leading to disappointment.

In summary, while many students find great value in the classes and commend the instructors' expertise, there are also warnings about the potential risks associated with course management and communication issues. The overall recommendation is to explore the offerings at Language Hub Group with due diligence.

Negative experience: This guy has scammed me and refuses to give me a refund. I have paid for in-person polish lessons, which were supposed to start weeks ago! He told me he didn't have enough bookings so could we start the following week, which I agreed. No communication throughout the week, and then the next week comes and he says he can't find in-person tutors and asked if I could move my lessons online instead. I only agreed because I saw the other reviews lately and realised I'd struggle to get my money back. Roll on another week (no communication again..), I asked him whether the classes are going ahead on teams or what's happening, and he said it will start the following week (so four weeks total past the original start date). At this point, the emails he was sending was about his personal circumstances and how he 'didn't want the business going down without a fight'. (I'll upload screenshots soon), so I asked for a refund. He sent me this massive email about how he's working in the boots factory trying to get money and that the business might be alright soon once his income improves.. all of which took me by surprise. I'm not a horrible person and understand business is tough but I thought I was dealing with a company here not some guy who's running a side business.. I paid for a service, which I haven't received, but he's still got my money. Please do not use this company you'll lose your money. I have reported this whole incident to the police and I have provided evidence and am currently waiting for the outcome. Once the police have completed their investigation I'll upload screenshots of my experience with this company to warn others away. Currently Carl has deactivated his email for the language hub and I've not been able to get through on the phone, so I said to my partner all along I wouldn't be surprised if he was just taking everyones money and then declares himself bankrupt or whatever and disappears. sad really to think I just wanted polish lessons, never thought I'd have to deal with this as the business had good reviews up until recently.

Negative experience: I was happy about the quality of the classes within the first term. The teachers were friendly and supportive. However, the second term of classes were consistently rescheduled or changed location. Without explanation the classes were then cancelled and no refund was provided for the rest of the classes. I have consistently tried to contact Carl and have been met with no response. I offered to take classes at a a later date with no response. It is a difficult time for money and I am really upset about having to pay for a service that I have never received.

Negative experience: Do not use this company, Carl Biddle takes money for courses but doesn’t deliver the service, pay his teachers or provide refunds! I’m sympathetic with anyone struggling financially but can’t afford to give £130 away myself. Avoid!

Florian Biermann Published on Google 3 years ago

Negative experience: My wife paid 130 pounds for a language course in autumn 2021 which was cancelled by Language Hub, and despite multiple reminders, she did not receive her money back. Unfortunately, we missed the deadline for Paypal dispute resolution, but we will now take it to a small claims court. Carl's excuses here at Google are pathetic. If he takes prepayments for language courses, then he must not spent that money unless the course actually starts. There seems to be a history of failed companies under his name. It is outrageous that people like him, who rip off well-meaning language learners, are allowed to start and run businesses!

Negative experience: I had a very bad experience with this organisation. My daughter studied Spanish but the teacher was always off sick or something else. At the end the manager told me that they can't find a teacher and need to cancel the Spanish class. Because was just in the beginning of the course they suggested to refund my money but didn't do it. I've sent them couple of emails and calls but still nothing. So disappointing

Janet Redmond Published on Google 3 years ago

Negative experience: Avoid! Carl Biddle is a con man! Takes your money and cancels the course promising a refund which he never pays, this has happened to several people. I had completed 2 courses and paid for the third which he cancelled using all sorts of pathetic excuses.I wish I had read the reviews beforehand I never would have given him my money. AVOID.

Hi Janet,

I apologise for the delay in replying. I don’t have any more lessons until 5 September so I can really get on top of things.

Unfortunately I had bitten off more than I could chew. From the beginning of the pandemic until last July when we couldn’t offer face-to-face courses, we had to diversify in order to survive. This involved offering online courses and also creating coursebooks for beginners in Spanish, Italian and French. I wouldn’t have been able to diversify to this extent before the first lockdown because all my time was taken up running the in-person language courses in Nottingham.

Creating coursebooks was something I’d been wanting to do before the pandemic but I never had the time before as I was so busy running courses.

I realised that what I enjoyed most was creating course materials:

https://www.languagehubonline.co.uk/course-materials/

video tutorials:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCouoO5r64B-oszclBh0R6sA/playlists

and comedy videos in 8 languages.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_UcQB4g6nrbmEgLdmGopuQ/videos?view=0&sort=p&flow=grid

To some extent I’ve been a victim of my own talent. The Polish video tutorials are really popular and come up very high in YouTube searches. If search ‘polish video tutorials’ in YouTube you’ll see how high my video ranks.

When we started offering in-person courses again last year I continued offering the online courses and also developed materials for Portuguese, Polish and German as well as continuing to create video tutorials in Spanish, French, Italian and Polish. I noticed that my Polish video tutorials are very popular and come up very high in YouTube searches so I saw an opportunity to specialise in the creation of a digital Polish course with embedded video tutorials.

The creation of these materials has been very time-consuming and distracted me from my other commitments in terms of managing the language school.

When we moved offices in May it caused quite a bit of disruption and one problem led to another. Courses had to be cancelled and we had more refunds to do than normal. Also, bookings were down as business is usually quiet during the summer.

I’ve had to make changes to the business. We now only offer French, Spanish, Italian and Polish courses. We no longer offer morning courses or Saturday courses.

Bookings are up. Now that people can only book evening courses we are going to have bigger classes which will be more profitable so everything will be even better than before.

Negative experience: Sadly, I have to leave this review. I would leave no stars but that is not an option. First of all, I want to say that Tosh, my German teacher, was excellent and I can´t complain about him. However, Carl does not know how to run a business. He is not paying the teachers and he is cancelling lessons without providing a refund. I paid for my German lessons in May, which were meant to start in June. Those were cancelled as they were not paying the teacher, who in fact was willing to start the new course as long as some of the outstanding debt was paid within a reasonable time. That obviously didn´t happen. I have been waiting since mid June for a refund of the course I never took. Carl stopped replying to my emails a month ago. If you really want to learn a language, please find yourself a better place where they pay their teachers for their time and will start the courses when they are due.

Negative experience: The course I chose never started. It was just date changes & delays coupled with poor communications. A refund wasn’t issued & the owner is refusing to acknowledge messages or answer the phone since requesting a refund. Please don’t sign up for a course with this company. It’s pure rogue trading that has left me £150 out of pocket.

Negative experience: Shocking service. Avoid at all costs. Took the money and then ignored us. After signing up for the beginners Italian course 3 of us waited outside the Language Hub for 25 minutes whilst the teacher ignored our calls and requests to be buzzed in. When someone else did let us in and we finally confronted the teacher, he admitted that he had hoped we would "just give up". We are now in the process of requesting full refunds. Don't waste your money.

Fantastic experience: Very well paced lessons which while imparting a lot of info, never feel overwhelming. The tutors use good, practical examples & are happy to answer even really obvious questions without discouraging you from the learning. The tutors also make the learning fun & the homework & materials are useful & you can see how these could be practically applied when conversing with people from the country whose language you’re learning. Intend to do further studying through the Language Hub in future, 5 ⭐️

Fantastic experience: As someone who is Half Foreign Ethnicity ( Half Italian ) but did not grow up being involved in Italy or with any of my Italian side of Family, I grew up all my life in Britain not knowing how to speak Italian and in Regards to me needing to learn Italian so I can explore the Italian side of myself and that I can always feel at home whenever I get the chance to explore Italy for itself and schedule Holidays there to help me settle in with the Italian side of myself, finding this Language Hub Place has been an absolute lifesaver with helping me on my journey of progressing to feeling more like a natural Italian, I am really grateful that I have found this place, if it wasn't for me being lucky enough to find this place I would of been clueless where to start and doubt I would of got as far as I have got to today with my learning level and where I am at now, the service is very laid back and professional, the teachers are very patient and supportive with my learning ability, they don't pressure me with rushing at all, they have been considerate enough and patient enough to work around my pace with me throughout each lesson and they always offer me chance to keep going over a certain task/topic and anything in general that I am struggling with in each lesson for me to revise, practice and recap, to support me further with helping me get better at memorising stuff more easier and smoother, since I have found this service and since I have been involved to tell the truth I will now be lost without this service, I am really grateful for everything that has been done for me to support me with my progression, I am really grateful and lucky for how supportive and patient the teachers have been with me and my learning ability and pace, from my overall experience this service is the perfect service to run to if you're trying to learn a different language and if your goal is to go on the journey to progress with learning the full language and becoming as professional and as confident just like a native speaker but unsure where to find this support, with whatever language you're trying to learn or master, if your goal is to become exactly like a native speaker, then look no further because this service is the perfect place in Nottingham that will put you straight on the right path towards achieving this goal, the team here are the most professional language teachers that exist in Nottingham, all my gratitude and appreciation goes with this organisation, I fully 100% recommend this service to everyone. Thank You.

Fantastic experience: I love my German classes with Tosh at the Language Hub. What I've found particularly impressive is how we're now completing entire lessons in German (with little to no English) in only a few months. The lessons are fun, good value for money, and the class sizes are small (up to 6 people), so there's plenty of attention for each participant. The language classes are currently online, but they're run very well.

Fantastic experience: The sessions have been on zoom for a while now but we are progressing nicely although we are all looking forward to face-to-face again when it is allowed. The tutor is very good fun but she isn't afraid to correct us where necessary. We usually spend a lot of time laughing which relaxes the atmosphere and helps us to bond as a group.

Fantastic experience: I started learning Italian with this group (in person) just before the first lockdown in 2020. The course was swiftly switched to online classes so that we could continue. (This was a godsend as nearly everything else I did had to stop.) Our tutor went back to Italy but we could still be taught by him! The tutor is excellent and uses a variety of learning resources in addition to the Contatti coursebooks. Although I had not been keen on the idea of online tutorials, they actually work very well and I don't have to go out on cold, wet nights! I intend to continue with these classes for a s long as possible. Ciao!

Positive experience: I am almost at the end of my first Italian course with the Language Hub and have learnt a great deal in a short amount of time. Classes cover a lot yet don't feel overwhelming or too intense, and the rest of the group are lovely. Carl is clearly passionate, and his knowledge of various languages is great for contextual information. I would definitely recommend and am looking forward to my next course!

Being online only in the current climate has made it more accessible and has minimal impact on the quality of the lessons. Carl has a wealth of knowledge across various languages and provides further insight during lessons to help provide contextual understanding of the language not available with self study or apps. Would highly recommend Language Hub if you want to jump into learning a new language.

Positive experience: I've just finished my first course with the Language hub. I have learnt so much in such a short time. In my the 10 week course I have learnt more and am definitely much more confinent than after my whole GCSE course. Due to the Coronavirus, I attended the online course which I was pleasantly surprised was interactive and supportive. All the tutors that have taken my lessons were kind, supportive, knowledgeable and always added little extra tips and experiences to make the course come alive. I would really recommend.

Fantastic experience: Brilliant Spanish course. Class sizes small (3-5). Reena is an excellent teacher and I feel I have made rapid progress and had fun since I started in January. Although I would have avoided online learning before, switching to online due to the current crisis was seamless and the lessons are just as good.

Fantastic experience: I had signed up for the first level Spanish course just as COVID hit so we went online, which I was not particularly enthusiastic about as my previous experiences of online learning have not been great plus now I have the world's oldest computer and world's worst internet service. However, it was all well organised and the tutor (Daniela) and my co-learner have made it interesting and fun and I think I have learned a bit too. Can't ask for much more than that. Muchos gracias.

Fantastic experience: Buongiorno a tutti! I have been a student with Language hub Nottingham for 2 years now and keep coming back as I really want to learn this language to be able to speak to Italian family members. Learning a new language seems to be particularly challenging for me but I realise on looking back that I have come a long way since my first lesson. Classes at Language Hub are small and fairly informal which gives each student the opportunity to read aloud and talk in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with excellent teachers who are flexible and adapt the class to the students’ needs. Since the lockdown lessons have been on Zoom which works wonderfully: learning in the comfort of home.

Fantastic experience: I attended the free Italian one hour taster lesson in January and as a result decided to attend the beginners class. Really enjoyed the classes, Matteo is an excellent teacher happy to adjust speed of learning to suit participants. If he asks you a question gives you time to answer but if you don’t know he helps out and you don’t feel embarrassed! I then signed up for the elementary lessons which have all so far been carried out on line. I was cautious about doing on line but has been great, there are only 3 students so there is plenty of opportunity for speaking. Support from Carl has been very good. I definitely recommend the Language Hub. Ann

Fantastic experience: Really friendly school with good teachers. I have been attending for almost two years now and really enjoy the classes. There's not too much focus on exams of levels, so if you're looking for something more intensive I wouldn't reccomend. But for a relaxed, informal and enjoyable way to learn a new language and meet people I couldn't reccomend more.

Fantastic experience: I've been attending French classes for a few months now and everything has been very good. The classes are relaxed and well structured with resources provided. The classes take place in a central location; however, for the last few weeks, we've been doing online lessons and they have worked really well and enabled me to keep studying.

Fantastic experience: I have really enjoyed lessons and the shift online learning was smooth and easy.

Fantastic experience: Excellent and friendly tutoring with good support. I am funding that the remote classes work very well, sometimes better than face to face.

Fantastic experience: I have now been attending French classes for over a year and really enjoy them. We are being taught by Celine who is very good and as she is a native speaker she is able to give us a real insight into the language and French culture. She is very keen to encourage us to discuss various topics in French, something which is helping my speech a lot. The text book used is comprehensive and moves at a pace which allows you to consolidate what you have learned. We are also supplied with extra work, which is good for practice. The groups are a good size and friendly. Would recommend the classes to anyone wanting to improve their French.

Fantastic experience: I am currently doing the elementary Italian course, having completed the beginner course with Nottingham language hub in February. The courses are excellent, taught by a native language speaker, who is a great teacher. Class sizes are small which means you get a lot of practise, and the other participants have been very friendly. I feel that I have made a lot of progress in a very short time. Although the face to face courses prior to Covid-19 were preferable, the online course has worked very well on the whole. It also means you don't have to be in Nottingham to benefit from the course and my son who is based in London is hoping to start the Italian course later this month. If you want to learn a language, I definitely would recommend the Nottingham Language Hub. I feel these courses represent very good value for money.

Fantastic experience: I have been studying Spanish at the Language Hub since last year. There are only four of us in the class and Daniela, our tutor, makes sure that we all get the chance to practice speaking Spanish and ask questions. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, and the hour and a half goes very quickly! Highly recommended!

Fantastic experience: Very informative and enjoyable I have attended the German basic course and have now started the Elementary 1 course. The small group helps with learning and participation. The tutoring is structured, focussed and tailored to individual capabilities. The tutor gives plenty of support and encouragement, and he certainly knows his subject! giving the benefit of ample real life experience. I have experienced both the classroom and 'on-line' classes and I think they have nailed the on-line version now!

Fantastic experience: Great experience so far I have been taking Spanish lessons at Language hub and I we have an amazing teacher, Daniela who has made the experience very worthwhile and fun. Online zoom classes during the lock down are working very well and thus way we do not miss a class. Definitely also good value for money.

Fantastic experience: I am now attending my second German Course with Language Hub. The best part of Language Hub are: Smaller Class strength. Great Teachers-I prefer to say 'Excellent' Due to the Covid -19 Situation, Classroom model has been changed to Online learning and I am enjoying online sessions too. George and Tosh are fantastic teachers who really helped me to learn German. Highly recommended!

Negative experience: Very disappointing response. I can see there are a number of excellent reviews on the web site and I imagine the 'Hub Group' provides a good resource for those learning English at a moderate to high level. However, I was disappointed to receive a very brief, though relatively courteous reply when I inquired about my wife learning English as a beginner. The answers "we do not offer" and "No" were very prevalent and no attempt was made to offer anything which might help her or give direction. (Carl Biddle did later send to me an email suggesting the Nottingham Language Academy could perhaps help.) In fact I was told that they would offer no beginner courses in the English language. I was left with a very poor impression, with 'can't do' rather than a 'can do' being the rather negative attitude. At least I was not offered a course which could not help and for that I show some gratitude. In this instance, my money was not wasted. Oh! Also please be careful, not all the courses stated on their website are actually available. I was told by Carl Biddle that one such course should have been removed.

Language Hub Group
Language Hub Group

Hi Donald, Unfortunately we don't offer the exam preparation course that you enquired about because there is little or no demand for it. This is also the reason that we don't offer English courses for absolute beginners. As for our website containing information about courses that aren't available, there is nothing on our website stating that we offer IELTS preparation courses. There's a question on the enquiry form asking if the leaner wants to prepare for an exam and IELTS is one of the exams given as an example although it doesn't say that we offer IELTS. If people contact us indicating they want to prepare for a particular exam we can see the demand and whether it will be viable to offer a suitable exam preparation course.

Negative experience: What a joke! I signed up for French classes on the 14th of December 2017. They were supposed to start on the 25th January. They do state that they need a certain amount of pupils to hold a class but once 1st January came around I assumed that the course was going ahead. I received an email on the 21st of January to say that they still only had 2 applicants. 4 days before I was supposed to attend! I have a life and I need to make arrangements for childcare, transport etc. I was told they would wait for one more week but, of course, there was no interest and the course was cancelled. I am now left with other courses already started so I am now left high and dry with no French lessons. This is not a professional company and they, obviously, are only concerned about themselves and their timetables. It doesn't matter that pupils (who, remember, are paying good money) have arrangements to make too. I did get a speedy refund

Hi Margaret,

I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience. In future we will let students know at least 7 days before a course starts if we have had too few bookings. We often receive a lot of bookings in the last few days before a course starts so it is sometimes difficult to predict whether a course will go ahead or not. This is the first time we have offered courses in Derby and Leicester and we only began advertising in those cities in December so we may need more time to generate more interest before we are able to put on courses. We have been running courses in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Polish in Nottingham for 4 years and seldom have to cancel courses due to insufficient bookings. I hope you find another course and please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Language Hub Group
Language Hub Group

Hi Margarita,

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Unfortunately the course you booked (the intensive Italian course for beginners) didn't go ahead as we only had two bookings and we need at least three students to run a course. As we had received several more enquiries about the course I expected to get some last-minute bookings and felt confident the course would go ahead. When that didn't happen I contacted you. I apologise for not contacting you sooner. As you had paid through PayPal we issued a refund through PayPal but it failed. We attempted a second time and it was successful so you have now been refunded in full.

As a gesture of goodwill we can offer a 50% discount if you book another course with us. Our 10-week courses with one lesson per week are are more popular than the intensive courses and as we get more bookings for them they usually go ahead.

Please let us know if you would like to attend one of our courses starting in September or October. We offer courses in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Polish.

Regards

Carl

Fantastic experience: I started to learn Italian from beginners level at Language House . We got plenty of practise as we were in a small class, and we covered quite a bit of ground in a fairly short space of time. The teacher, Julie was excellent and made the lessons very enjoyable. Also I was in a nice, friendly group, so it became a fun evening out as well as an opportunity to learn a new language.

Hi. I replied to this some time ago but our reply has disappeared. I don't understand why we have received a review from a customer based in Belfast as we are a Nottingham-based language school and we have never had a student with your name. I have asked Google to remove this review but they have done nothing. Having a negative review is one thing but you have clearly given this review thinking we are a language school with a similar name in Belfast.
