Bonjour French Classes in Edinburgh

Fantastic experience: I had a really positive experience studying here. Although I had previously studied French in school, I was never confident enough to actually speak it, so this course was both a great refresh and a big push for me to start having real conversations in French. I started with a beginner’s course and then continued to the next level for a few months last year, which helped me gain the confidence to communicate at a basic level. The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, and the classes are very engaging. I always looked forward to attending. My teacher, Szymon, speaks multiple languages, which meant we benefited from a variety of explanations and perspectives that made things much easier to understand. The homework was also very well structured—it pushed us to improve, but in a motivating and supportive way rather than feeling overwhelming. Overall, the teachers are very knowledgeable and genuinely invested in their students’ progress. I would definitely recommend this school to anyone looking to start or build confidence in French in a friendly and encouraging environment.

I really enjoyed the small group format where I got to meet some lovely people and learn some more real life French phrases, slang and idioms. Szymon is a great teacher and puts his real life experiences into his teaching which I get a lot out of. Would really recommend for anyone thinking of joining a French club in Edinburgh. Fantastic experience: I’d been thinking about taking French classes for a long time, and I’m so glad I finally took the plunge with this company. The classes are really small groups and are held in a lovely French café, which creates such a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, and every week you get to try delicious pastries or treats — a really special touch. Emma is an amazing teacher who makes the classes fun, light-hearted, and completely non-stressful. I started with very little French and feel like I’m learning something new every week, with the pace always matching the class. I also attended a Christmas evening where we played games in French, ate lovely nibbles and met people from other classes. I couldn’t recommend this more to anyone thinking about learning French.

Fantastic experience: I have been doing French classes with Bonjour French for about a year with Louise and there's a reason I keep coming back for so many blocks! The classes provide so much value and I have found my confidence again in speaking french! Louise does an amazing job at creating an atmosphere at the classes which is friendly, encouraging and learning something new everytime. I had the chance to improve my vocabulary, practice grammar and I found that the varying classes are suitable for all levels, whether someone is learning french for the first time, trying to remember, or taking their french skills to the next level! I have done the in-person classes at the french café which I found great as they are both structured but feel relaxed, as there's so many chances to practice french conversations and learn french how really the french would speak which is not something I had come across before! I would definitely come back and I've recommended Bonjour French to everyone I've spoken to about learning french at any level, and for anyone thinking about it, I'd say don't wait try it now it's a gem, you'll be happy you did!

Fantastic experience: I’ve been taking private and group French lessons with Bonjour French, taught by Emma and Louise, since the summer. Before my first private lesson, Emma reached out to ask what I wanted to focus on (this in the days before our first class, not during lesson time). The two 1:1 lessons I had with her were excellent—she was supportive, encouraging, and structured the sessions to help me improve. The homework and learning materials she provided after each class were tailored to our discussions and even included a motorbike-themed exercise based on our chat (we’d talked about my motorbikes in the lesson) which was more enjoyable than any homework exercise I ever had in 7 years of French classes at school! I’ve now just finished my first block of group classes with Louise. Emma’s private lessons gave me a real confidence boost, but I was still a bit nervous about joining a group after nearly 10 years away from classroom French. I needn’t have worried as from the first moment of the class Louise makes you feel at ease in the super friendly, supportive and really welcoming environment she has created in her school. Our group of six had a great mix of free-flowing conversation and structured learning. Louise ensures everyone gets a chance to speak, and the materials—available both in print and online—are clear, concise, and perfect for reviewing after class. I’ve really enjoyed the sessions and have already signed up for the next block. I can’t recommend Bonjour French enough. Emma and Louise are brilliant teachers—kind, patient, and able to explain tricky grammar or vocabulary clearly in both French (as native speakers) and in English. Whatever your level from complete beginner right through to advanced French speakers if you’re thinking of having French classes then this is the language school for you.

It was also great to learn some key fundamentals of French that you would have never picked up or learnt from Duolingo. Such a valuable space to learn French in an interactive and practical way.

Fantastic experience: I have just completed my first block of 5 hours with Emma at Bonjour French Classes in Edinburgh and have enjoyed my classes so much I have booked another block! I have chosen to have my lessons in person, at a café, which has worked really well for me. I really value being able to speak with a native French speaker face-to-face and build my confidence that I am actually being understood even if there’s a few mistakes along the way. My teacher, Emma, has just been fantastic too. I can tell she is really passionate about teaching and it shows in her lesson plans. I asked for some help with learning language specific to my work and she went above and beyond. She researched the business I work for to put together some really thought through, useful lessons that will allow me to start using my french outside of my lessons. If that isn’t the goal for everyone learning, what is!? Generally, my lessons are an ideal mix of free conversation and structured content. It keeps it fun and stops us getting bogged down in grammar. I’m really looking forward to continuing my lessons and definitely recommend Bonjour to anyone looking to improve their French!

I wasn't sure how effective online would be but Gabrielle has managed to create a welcoming learning environment with mutual camaraderie. My French has improved and I'm looking forward to another block of classes.

The classes have a welcoming informal vibe and there’s lots of laughter…..And my long forgotten school boy French is slowly but surely improving. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with Louise and Gabrielle. I have attended both classes and 1:1s and I rate them highly. By nature, I am a very introverted person and put a lot of pressure on myself. Both teachers have shown me so much compassion and support. They make the conversations so fun and we always have a laugh!

Fantastic experience: I can't recommend Bonjour French Classes highly enough. I have been stuck at basic school French level for decades, and have tried every app and online course to improve. I took the plunge by taking 1:1 lessons with Szymon and wish I'd done it years ago. Szymon is faultlessly patient, and crafts each lesson expertly, making it feel like a really good conversation -- or switching to grammar when you are all talked out. I used to freeze when trying to converse in French, but Szymon made me comfortable enough to try, make mistakes and learn a lot in the process. He is a lovely person and good company too, which helps.

Fantastic experience: I absolutely LOVE my group french classes with Louise. They have been a true highlight of my week since starting in June this year. I previously attended classes at the Alliance Française which I enjoyed. However, I love the classes with Louise due to the small class size (6 persons) in an informal setting (La Barantine - with a tasty macaron!) that naturally encourages greater conversation. I’ve found my confidence in spoken french to have grown faster than I anticipated. The small class size also allows for greater debate & discussion between class members in a fun way that always brings up new vocabulary. Louise is endlessly patient, encouraging & warm with everyone so mistakes are learning points without fear. Merci Louise! I look forward to the next term.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to Louise's French classes for six months now and I'd highly recommend then. They're really enjoyable and I've seen my French improve a lot in that time. The classes are six people, a nice size as you are able to spend a lot of time practising speaking together. Louise is a great teacher and tailors the content to our abilities. Fantastic experience: Ive been attending Louise’s improvers group class in person for about 4 months now and I can’t recommend it enough! I’ve been trying to learn French on and off for many years but it’s only since joining classes with Louise that I feel I will actually keep it up long term and continue making progress. The class size of 6 is just right for an informal feeling and the exercises we do in the classes are always engaging. Having attended 2 different blocks so far, I can see Louise really makes an effort to tailor the content based on the groups progress. She makes a good variety of different exercises for practicing the concepts we learn and classes are never repetitive, even when we are continuing the same concept over a few weeks. It’s great to have lots of opportunity for discussion too and Louise is very good at giving prompts to encourage each of us to talk and answer questions in French. Louise is such a lovely person, she is always cheerful and patient, and it actually feels more like learning with a friend than a teacher :) Finally, if the excellent classes weren’t enough, it’s always a bonus to be offered a delicious macaron from La Barantine at the class! Merci beaucoup Louise, j’espère que je peux continuer apprendre avec toi jusqu’à ce que je sois bilingue!

Fantastic experience: My boyfriend has been tutored on a weekly basis for over a year now with Louise in an effort to be comfortable in speaking French with I, as I didn’t have the patience, however since working with Louise he has developed his ability to converse in French and continues to develop week on week. Her lessons and dedication to explain complex French nuisances and her ability to create real life scenarios has improved his knowledge and confidence. The only negative I have with Louise’s teaching is that she calls chocolatines - pain aux chocolat.

Fantastic experience: Louise is a brilliant teacher. She caters to all levels during the class. My Gtrnch language level was B2 a year ago, however it suffered and became rusty from not being in use. Going to Louise's intermediate class helped me pay attention to the grammar and speaking French regularly again (once a week). She's very patient and explains rules very well. Tana

Fantastic experience: French group classes with Gabrielle were an absolute joy. Gabrielle is an experienced, engaging, energetic, kind, patient person. I use "person" in this context instead of teacher as although Gabrielle is an amazingly talented teacher, she also has this unobtrusive, fun and friendly energy which makes her feel like one of the class. The class atmosphere is warm, inclusive, relaxed and professional. Gabrielle naturally puts everyone at their ease and makes everyone feel welcome and inclusive. I will miss my lessons dearly but hope to return soon.

I now do regular lessons with Lara is fantastic and very supportive teacher, she helps me to be lucid in the most difficult moments and the lessons with her are very pleasant and never boring! They are both very professional and attentive during and after the lesson. If I could, I gave more stars!

Fantastic experience: I had French lessons with Szymon over several months as I needed to improve my French for a job application. Szymon was really great at identifying the areas I needed to focus on, providing regular home work, following up on the intricacies of grammar we discussed, and also happy to delve into technical areas. He clearly has a love for language and this comes across in his teaching - I can strongly recommend him as a French teacher and he certainly contributed to me getting my new job :-).

Fantastic experience: I have had 10 one to one lessons with Louise and I can't recommend her enough. When I started I was nervous but Louise put me at ease in our first lesson. I'm new to french but I can now string basic sentence together and understand basic french listening. Louise is a fantastic teacher. Fantastic experience: I have been studying with Louise in Bonjour French Classes for roughly 10 months now. Previously I had French classes with various teachers within both italki and tutorful before taking a trial class with Louise and have never looked back since. I can safely say since beginning classes with Louise my enjoyment of learning French has increased, I'm more confident and comfortable than I thought I could be without having to move to France. Louise is very easy to talk to and encourages you, I've been attending for 10 months and we still find plenty to discuss and plenty for me to learn each class! The feedback she provides throughout the session is always the right amount to push you just beyond your current level but not overwhelm you. This has really helped me to consistently develop my French without feeling frustrated or getting down on myself. I would recommend anyone considering classes to try Bonjour. One of the most important considerations to maintaining a consistent practice at anything is being comfortable and keeping it fun! You will find both of those here.

Fantastic experience: Bin begeistert , hatte kaum Vorkenntnisse der Sprache und Louise hat mir schnell die Hemmungen genommen , ich konnte mich schnell mit ihr im einfachen Gespräch verständigen und mittlerweile auch diskutieren über interessante Themen - alles nach relativ kurzer Zeit . Es macht sehr viel Spaß mit ihr die Sprache zu erlernen , ohne Druck , sie ist immer sehr gut vorbereitet , es gibt Hausaufgaben und egal ob Fehler , sie korrigiert liebevoll und unterstützt mit vielen hilfreichen Hinweisen . Meine Muttersprache ist deutsch und somit musste ich auf französisch mit ihr kommunizieren ( zu Anfangs wohl bestimmt interessant für Louise ) - für mich ein Riesenvorteil und Louise hat das sehr souverän gemacht , mich gefordert und gefördert . Ich kann den Unterricht sehr sehr empfehlen - merci , merci , merci Louise , du machst das super !!! und es macht viel Spaß !
